Pilates

Pilates (pul-LAT-teez) is a method of exercise and physical movement created by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900s. With a revolutionary approach to health and fitness, he drew from various disciplines to design a unique program of strengthening and stretching the entire body—from the deepest skeletal muscles to the larger performance muscles.

He integrated concepts from body building, boxing, Chinese acrobatics, gymnastics, yoga and the natural movements of  babies to develop movements that build balance, coordination, control, flexibility, stamina, and muscular and skeletal strength.

He designed his own equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Spine Corrector, to aid and challenge the body to progress its way toward previously unimaginable accomplishments.

Every exercise on each piece is based upon some combination of his six principles: balance, coordination, control, precision, dynamics and flow of movement.
